The Hacker's Tribute Vol. 6: Huawei, Instant Apps, and JDK13

tech

It’s great to be alive, ladies and gentlemen coders, our most positive issue of the Hacker’s Tribute vol. 6 has arrived!

Java has finally announced its latest features, Open Liberty is making waves, and gamers of the world can enjoy new apps in as a little as seconds. It’s a world of wide-opening doors. Of course, open doors tempt intruders too, so we’ve prepared advice to aid there.

Some doors, on the other hand, may be closing, as Chinese giant Huawei faces more restrictions. What this means for you, the developer will be explained in great detail – so rest assured.

So, in this issue, I bring words of advice, good news, and news of caution. Things are wonderful, and getting wonderful-er, unless you’re Huawei.

What a magical summer, for most of us – at least!

Yours optimistically,

Dan 'the Man'

1. With Freedom and Open Liberty for All

Liberty may have been born in France, but it was perfected by IBM this month, with their latest update. Open Liberty 19.0.0.4 features support for the MicroProfile Reactive Streams Operators 1.0 API, JDK 12, and Oracle Universal Connection Pool. The world of open source is taking a step in the right direction.

2. JDK 13: The Ultimate Tease

September 17 will redefine the term ‘big day’, as new features are confirmed. Highly-scalable garbage collector enhancements will return unused memory. Application class-data sharing extension will enable class archiving following application execution. Reimplementing legacy socket API will mean fewer bugs. Simple. Effective. More features are rumoured too, read more here.

3. IoTeeming with Holes

The longer the borders, the harder they can be to defend. As the Internet of Things embraces all aspects of our lives, we become vulnerable to malicious software accessing information from virtually anywhere. Sounds alarmist, but you can ‘fool & futureproof’ your IoT network. Remember, your home is a castle, defend it well!

4. Annnnd Huawei they go…

The Chinese wonder from the heart of Shenzhen. The world’s silver medallist of smartphone production is bruising from its latest turmoil, amidst becoming subject to US trade sanctions. Google is the latest in suspending its partnership by excluding it from future Android updates. It joins a growing list of firms. What this means for you, is to consider designing your Huawei-centric apps independent to Google. Time to diversify!

5. Less Time Means More Play?

Native Android apps without installation? It’s all part of a much faster future. Google Play instant will allow instant gaming experiences across Play Store, Google Search, social media, and everywhere! All developers are invited and can use Cocos and Unity plugins to build instant games. It’s a breath of fresh air for that little gamer living in all of us. Unless you’re Huawei.

Hackers of the world dream to be him. And that’s an understatement. With methods decades ahead of cyberspace, he’s proceeded only by his own reputation. ‘The Man’ infamous for single-handedly causing the ’08 global financial meltdown, he dropped off-grid searching for purpose. He twice-dominated each of the Himalayan peaks, negotiated the rift valleys of Africa, and swam the Amazonian Basin end-to-end. It was in Siberia where we caught up to him – convincing him to work for the ‘good guys’. The veteran’s veteran of coding, now confidently within our ranks, is finally a force for good. Just don’t test him.
