The Hacker’s Tribute Vol. 97: AI Pseudoscience to Rule them All

tech

Hello, Real Hackers!

Do not miss this issue to learn how AI is misled by a scarf and a bookshelf - we are once again on the lookout for allegedly mischievous, but quite easy to deceive bots!

In addition to previewing recent tech events from Microsoft and Cloudfare, Hacker's Tribute will provide information on a new ScyllaDB Go driver that has the potential to be a game changer. Be careful, because the multitude of new releases may overwhelm you (and the colours)

Let us get to it!

Sincerely,

Dan 'The Man' Kowalski

Can You Automate Equality?

We got off to a good start this week. We refute machine learning algorithms when it comes to the issue of fair and equal diversity in hiring. And this time we are on the side of the Cambridge academics! They even go so far as to claim that AI-based hiring software is "automated pseudoscience." And why? This new AI technology is supposed to eliminate human bias and help companies promote diversity, but researchers at Cambridge University have shown that the software is glaringly... let us call it unreliable. They examined how facial expressions are used in AI hiring algorithms to determine the personality of job applicants. It seems that wearing glasses or a headscarf during a video interview lowers your rating due to neuroticism...

Ready, Steady... Perform!

Allow our athletes to step into the ring! Will the brand new ScyllaDB Go driver be able to outperform ScyllaDB Rust Driver and GoCQL and win the prize for best performance? We will see. Okey, enough with the dramatic suspense, I am not good at that. But both ScyllaDB and the students of Warsaw University undoubtedly are! How great is it that they were able to develop a new ScyllaDB Go driver that could replace the current front-runners in the game and work much better with memory management and runtime? Microsoft Gone Live

What do lush colours, an abundance of ports, and Intel have to do with each other? (Aside from being a rather odd beginning to a 2000s joke?) That's a tricky question, and I'll answer it to the best of my ability. It all boils down to Microsoft's recent Surface 2022 event, which was streamed live on 10/ 12. If you missed it, you can read about brand new software, fancy gadgets and laptops in this article. Surface Laptop 5, Surface Pro 9 and Surface Studio 2 Plus are also included.

A Sneakpeak in the Cloudflare GA Week

Cloudflare has returned with two of its innovation weeks after a brief hiatus of a few months. Cloudflare tends to showcase new product offerings and technologies during these gatherings, so expectations are high. And, believe me, they do not disappoint! About 20 new products and upgrades in one week? The selection is intimidating even to me. It shows that in addition to their carnival of blog post promotion, they actually deliver. Hackers of the world dream to be him. And that’s an understatement. With methods decades ahead of cyberspace, he’s proceeded only by his own reputation. ‘The Man’ infamous for single-handedly causing the ’08 global financial meltdown, he dropped off-grid searching for purpose. He twice-dominated each of the Himalayan peaks, negotiated the rift valleys of Africa, and swam the Amazonian Basin end-to-end. It was in Siberia where we caught up to him – convincing him to work for the ‘good guys’. The veteran’s veteran of coding, now confidently within our ranks, is finally a force for good. Just don’t test him.
